ABOUT THE GROUP:
This group is for High School youth from 9th grade through 12th grade. It is ecumenical, which means it involves youth from local churches of varied denominations. The group is called the N.E.W.S (Newtown Ecumenical Workcamp Servants) because through the years we try to serve people in the North, East, West, and South. Our members are lovingly known as "workcampers".
Each year a service trip is planned to take place during a weekin the summer. Planning and fundraising for the trip is a year-long process for these youth, but it is all worthwhile when they learn how they can improve the living conditions, the spirits, and even the faith of the people they work for.
The 2018 Summer Service Trip our 40 N.E.W.S. and 10 adult chaperones will embark on a journey to Biloxi, Mississippi, from June 24 to July 1, 2018. They will spend a week with the Back Bay Mission, bringing God's love to residents by helping those in need.
Back Bay Mission, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, has a simple mission: to strengthen neighborhoods, seek justice, and transform lives. Their ministries focus on housing rehabilitation, the food pantry, and the Micah Day Center. Our N.E.W.S. group will serve the housing rehabilitation program, which restores and renovates houses for low-income homeowners on the Mississippi Gulf coast and ensures that those homeowners have maintainable, sustainable, and affordable housing. During this ministry, volunteers repair homes, with work including framing, roofing, installing drywall, painting, installing cabinetry, and other construction projects.
After a week of hard work repairing home with Back Bay Mission (BBM), these youths' hands will grow a little tougher, their arms a little stronger, and their relationship with God a whole lot deeper. They will learn that God has given them the ability to give more that they ever realized. Best of all, they'll discover first- hand that regardless of geography, education, or economic class, we are all equal members of the family of God.
